I recently discovered a way to make the crispiest lumpia ever and I just had to share it with you all. This Crispy Lumpia recipe is a fantastic take on Filipino fried spring rolls that are stuffed with a delightful mix of ground pork, finely chopped onion, and minced garlic.

I also toss in julienned carrots, green beans cut into small pieces, and a bit of thinly sliced cabbage for that extra crunch. Why I Like this Recipe

I love how this recipe is super easy to follow even if I sometimes mess up the amounts of spices but it still turns out incredibly tasty. I enjoy the crispiness of the lumpia because that crunchy texture paired with the tender filling makes every bite feel special. I also really appreciate how the mix of vegetables and ground pork gives a balanced flavor that reminds me of home cooked meals. Lastly, the process of wrapping and frying the lumpia is fun and makes me feel like I accomplished something cool even when things don’t go perfectly according to plan.

Ingredients

Ingredients photo for Crispy Lumpia Recipe

  • Ground Pork: Rich protein base that adds savory flavor and tends to be fatty sometimes.
  • Onion: Provides subtle sweetness and depth in flavor while releasing a pleasant aroma.
  • Garlic: Adds spicy, robust flavor which enhances the overall savory taste profile.
  • Carrots: Crunchy and naturally sweet, they boost texture and fiber content in the lumpia.
  • Green Beans: Lock in vitamins and visible crunch, contributing freshness and vibrant color.
  • Soy Sauce: Intensely salty and umami, harmonizing all flavors of the seasoned filling.
  • Egg: Helps bind the mixture and improves texture while adding a boost of richness.

Ingredient Quantities

  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 medium onion, chopped finely
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 1 cup green beans, trimmed and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup cabbage, thinly sliced (optional but adds a nice crunch)
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 package lumpia or spring roll wrappers (about 20 sheets)
  • Oil for frying

How to Make this

1. In a large pan over medium-high heat, sauté the chopped onion in a little oil until soft then add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

2. Add the ground pork to the pan with the onions and garlic and cook until it starts to brown.

3. Stir in the carrots, green beans, and optional cabbage, and let the vegetables cook for about 3 to 4 minutes until they are tender but still slightly crunchy.

4. Season the mixture with salt, ground black pepper, and soy sauce then add the beaten egg. Stir everything together until the egg is fully cooked.

5. Remove the pan from heat and let the filling cool for a few minutes.

6. Lay out a spring roll wrapper on a flat surface and place about a tablespoon of the filling near the bottom of the wrapper.

7. Fold the bottom of the wrapper over the filling, tuck in both sides, and roll the wrapper tightly into a log shape. Seal the edge with a bit of water.

8. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling until all the mixture is used up.

9. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat, and carefully lower in a few lumpia at a time.

FAQ

Yea, you can use ground chicken as a substitute though it might need a bit more seasoning for flavor.

No worries, you can use spring roll wrappers instead. They work just fine.

Make sure your oil is hot enough and fry them in small batches so the temperature dont drop too much.

Yea, you can bake them in a preheated 400°F oven, but they might not come out as crunchy as when fried.

No, its not too spicy so if you really want some heat, you can always add a bit of chili sauce.

Crispy Lumpia Recipe Substitutions and Variations

  • Ground Pork: Try ground chicken or turkey instead its lighter and still works great in this dish
  • Onion: You can swap out a chopped onion for a few chopped green onions if you dont have a medium onion
  • Soy Sauce: If you’re low sodium or out you can use tamari or coconut aminos which flavors the lumpia nicely
  • Spring Roll Wrappers: Use wonton wrappers in a pinch although the texture might be slightly different
  • Cabbage: If you cant find cabbage you can sub in some thinly sliced lettuce or bok choy to keep that crunch

Pro Tips

1. Make sure you dont overcook the veggies – adding them just long enough to keep crunch is key.
2. When browning the pork, avoid crowding the pan. This helps the meat get that nice color and flavor.
3. Work fast when mixing in the egg so it cooks evenly with the rest of the filling.
4. For extra flavor, try a dipping sauce with a mix of vinegar, chili, and a bit of sugar—it’s a simple but game-changing twist.
