I’ve always been amazed at how perfectly these Instant Pot hard boiled eggs turn out. I first tried this recipe when I was experimenting with my new pressure cooker and the results blew my mind.

Using just 12 large eggs, 1 cup of water, and a bowl filled with about 6 cups of ice water, I was able to achieve eggs that practically peel themselves. The cook times for a 6 quart and even an 8 quart Instant Pot follow the foolproof 5-5-5 method, letting you easily cook up to a dozen eggs at once.

I’ve made these before for quick breakfasts and even used them for egg benedict on a lazy weekend morning. Trust me, once you try these eggs, you won’t settle for any other method.

Their easy peel quality and consistency make them my go-to recipe every time I crave a protein-packed snack.

Why I Like this Recipe

I like this recipe because it’s really simple and only needs a few basic ingredients so I never get stressed about what to add. I also love that using the Instant Pot makes it super fast and easy to get perfect eggs every time. The part where the eggs are chilled in ice water is amazing cause the shells come off so effortlessly and that’s always a bonus. Lastly, I like that the instructions are really clear, even if I’m a bit clumsy sometimes, so I can always count on getting great eggs.

  • 12 large eggs
  • 1 cup water
  • Ice water (enough to fill a bowl so the eggs are completely submerged, approx 6 cups)

How to Make this

1. Place the trivet inside your Instant Pot and pour in 1 cup of water.

2. Carefully arrange 12 large eggs on the trivet in a single layer.

3. Secure the top lid, making sure the pressure valve is set to sealing.

4. For a 6 quart Instant Pot, set it to cook on high pressure for 5 minutes, then let it naturally release pressure for 5 minutes; for an 8 quart cooking pot, follow the same 5-5-5 method.

5. Once the cooking cycle is finished, quickly turn the valve to vent to zap any remaining pressure.

6. Using a slotted spoon, immediately transfer the eggs into a large bowl filled with about 6 cups of ice water.

7. Let the eggs sit in the ice water for at least 5 minutes so they cool completely.

8. The cooling process helps the shell separate easily from the egg white.

9. When you’re ready to eat, peel the eggs by gently cracking the shell all over.

10. Enjoy your perfect Instant Pot hard boiled eggs or chill them in the fridge for later snacking.

Equipment Needed

1. Instant Pot (6 or 8 quart depending on what you have)
2. Trivet that fits inside your pot
3. Measuring cup (for 1 cup of water)
4. Slotted spoon (for removing the eggs safely)
5. Large bowl (to hold about 6 cups of ice water)

FAQ

A: Once the Instant Pot timer goes off, plunge the eggs straight into a bowl of ice water. This shock helps the shell separate from the egg, making them easier to peel.

A: Yup, you can store them in the fridge for up to a week. Keep them in a covered container or sealed bag to maintain their freshness.

A: Sure thing, you can. Just make sure the eggs don't stack on top of each other too much and the water covers them completely to cook evenly.

A: Not really. The eggs cook quickly under pressure, so stick to the recommended time and the natural release method to avoid over or undercooked eggs.

A: It’s best to discard the water. Using fresh water keeps the process simple and clean, without any funky flavors leaching into the next batch.

Perfect Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs Recipe Substitutions and Variations

  • If you dont have 12 large eggs, you can try using medium or extra large eggs instead, just bear in mind the cooking time might need slight adjustments.
  • If you dont have 1 cup water, you could substitute it with chicken or veggie broth to add a bit more flavor to your eggs.
  • For the ice water, if you run out of ice cubes, chill some tap water in the fridge and use that, making sure the eggs are fully submerged.

Pro Tips

1. You gotta make sure all the eggs are laid out in a single layer on the trivet. If they’re bumped together they might not cook evenly and some parts might end up overcooked whereas others will be underdone.

2. Don’t rush when you’re switching the valve to vent out the steam. The pot is super hot and if you hurry you could get burnt or mess up the eggs.

3. Once the eggs are done, dunking them straight into that deep ice water bath really helps make peeling easier. Let them chill for a good while to let the shells loosen up.

4. A little tip that might help is to give the eggs a few gentle taps all over before you start peeling. You can find a few cracks and then the shell comes off more smoothly without taking too much of the egg white off.
